Disgraceful ripoff!

I bought this new computer last month and transferred my iTunes library to it.  I'd bought a bunch of songs from Apple over the years, but I now learn that I'm only allowed to play them on a maximum of five computers, of which this is the third, and then I have to buy them again.  That's like saying that I can't read a book because I took it off a different shelf.  I am fuming, and will never buy anything from that bunch of thieves again.

  1. Fear not young man, that just means 5 computers at one time.
If you still have access to the older computers just log on from them and "de-authorise" from settings.
If you have scrapped them, just open iTunes and select "de-authorise ALL" the afterwards check for purchases and download all your music - doesn't take long and ensures Bono gets his well earned 10p.

  2. Yes, I checked that too, because at present I have iTunes music on five devices (computer, pod, two phones and pad) and needed to know what would happen if I replaced any of them.

  3. Thanks Rog, at first I thought 'whay would I want to listen on five computers at the same time', then I got it. So it's not a problem at the moment. Would just have been nice if Apple had been as informative.
Oh, thanks for the 'young' too.

Z, surely the iPod doesn't count against the five?? That WOULD be serious ripoff.

  4. Thanks for mentioning this, Tim! Rog has now explained why I haven't been able to play some of my music on my latest laptop!

  5. I suppose to pursue your analogy you would have to have the same book on five different shelves. I'm very glad broken biro, professional librarian, has turned up in the nick of time and is on hand to guide you along this thorny path.

  6. Goodness, what a relief that Apple turn out not to be ripoff merchants after all.

  7. Yes, I jumped to the wrong conclusion, assisted by the less than helpful iTunes message. So I apologise to Apple for calling them thieves. Now off to iTunes to find out whether there's a 'help' page called 'What to do when you get a new computer'.

  8. No, there isn't. But armed with Rog's technical expertise, I found out what to do. (Go to Store, Authorise this computer. You need a password.)
Z, the pod, pad and phones don't count against the five.
