Two visits down, probably two to go. I’m spreading my custom around three local
facilities – two Tescos and an Asda – because I don’t want to be tagged as some
kind of bottle-sniffing freak by the CCTV monitor guys. I imagine them going “Him again?” and opening
a book on the exact timing of my next visit.

The Meaning of Bardrainney (Inver)
As far as I can remember (I can’t find my copy), ‘The
Meaning of Liff’ does not offer a word for ‘the sensation of stale wine
trickling down your sleeve at the bottlebank’. After this morning, I needed such a word, and after
a cursory gazetteer scan I lighted on the above, which I think does the job. Although it may be too long, and maybe
insufficiently expletable. I did
consider Zouch (Notts), Wetwang (W. Yorks) and Sturry (Kent).

Wetwang is already in Liff and means something quite different!

ReplyDeleteDo you not have kerbside recycling collections where you are? Spread them out amongst the neighbours' boxes if you must, but evidence of a party seems quite widespread around here. It must be ten years since I went to a bottle bank.
ReplyDeleteWe do, but they don't take bottles. Besides, I enjoy the bottle bank, especially when they smash.
DeleteOur local Tesco has a huge recycling machine - and it always has a great long queue of people recycling boxloads of bottles.

The huge machine sounds interesting, we just have bins with holes in them. As for the great long queues - not saying anything, but I have some experience of Cheesetown ...

The party sounds a great success it must have been if Mig was there, now there's a person who might sniff an empty wine bottle (no offence intended to Mig) but she strikes me as one similar to myself who would be disappointed at the emptiness.

DeleteIt was a success, Mig was indeed there but I'm sure didn't encounter any empty bottles.
Kerbside recycling? That's certainly not hit Norfolk. It's the bottle bank for us too. And we save up for weeks and take dozens of bottles every time. We're brazen.

ReplyDeleteI politely didn't sniff the empty ones and instead, engaged with the others of which there were many! Very nice too.
